Education
and sources of knowledge

I have a state diploma in architecture, many years of independent study of five classical shastras and courses with Indian masters of the tradition. The method rests on architectural education, academic translations of primary sources and practical work with projects.

Architectural education

Professional

State diploma in architecture

Prydniprovska State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (PSACEA), Faculty of Architecture. Graduated in 2008. Full professional architectural education: design regulations, structural solutions, engineering systems and legal aspects of construction.

This is the basic professional document without which I would not have the right to practice architecture as a craft.

Vedic architecture: work with primary sources

My Vastu school is not a «lineage claim», but a systematic study of five classical Sanskrit treatises that form the basis of the entire tradition of Vedic architecture. These books are the foundation on which every authentic Vastu school in India stands.

The five shastras in my work

ShastraWhat it isWhat I use in practice
MānasāraOne of the oldest and most complete treatises on Vastu Shastra; an encyclopedia of architecture and sculpture.Canons of proportion, classification of buildings, module calculation and orientation to the cardinal directions.
MayamataA South Indian treatise of the 8th-9th centuries, attributed to Maya; one of the key texts of the Maya Vastu school.Vastu Purusha mandala, room placement and ayadiya calculation of favorable dimensions.
Vāstu ŚāstraThe body of classical texts on Vedic architecture, connected with Sthapatya Veda.Principles of the brahmasthan, natural balance and the ritual side of construction.
Bṛhat SaṁhitāVarahamihira's 6th-century treatise: an encyclopedia of jyotisha, Vastu, meteorology and omens. The relationship between Vastu and the client's astrology, and muhurta calculation for the foundation.
Samarāṅgaṇa SūtradhāraKing Bhoja's 11th-century treatise on architecture, urban planning and engineering.Urban planning, settlements, public buildings and typology of structures.

Courses and conferences with Indian masters

Reading the shastras is the base. But living knowledge is transmitted through personal work with teachers for whom Vastu is a family, multi-generational tradition. I have taken part in conferences and courses with Indian masters of the tradition, and continue to do so regularly.

Example of study format

Conference with Kṛṣṇan Namboodiripad

The Namboodiripads are a Brahmin family tradition from Kerala, carriers of living Sthapatya Veda knowledge over many generations. This kind of study means reviewing real cases, direct answers on plots, drawing mandalas and discussing difficult legal and architectural situations.

Such conferences and courses are a regular part of my education. Through them I check my practice against a living tradition.
